View full detailsBoxing headgear protects your face, forehead, and temples during sparring and competition. It is required for most amateur boxing bouts and sparring sessions in gyms. The right headgear stays in place without shifting, doesn’t restrict your vision, and fits snug enough to absorb contact.
For most boxers, the choice is between open-face headgear for competition and training where sight lines matter, or full-face headgear with cheek and chin protection for hard sparring, MMA, or protecting an existing cut. Many fighters own both and choose by session.
For USA Boxing competition, select a currently certified model permitted by your division and event rules. A “competition headgear” product name alone does not confirm approval.
Headgear fit is critical. It should sit snug without shifting, with padding clear of your eyeline. The chin strap and rear laces must be fastened properly. A headgear that rotates is too loose; one that slides across your eyes is more dangerous than protection. Try it on at our Los Angeles and Reseda locations.
Fit your mouthguard at the same time to ensure your headgear and mouthguard work together without interfering or shifting during rounds.
Boxing headgear can help reduce facial cuts and abrasions, but it should not be relied on to prevent concussion or other traumatic brain injury.
Open face headgear generally offers less obstruction to vision. Full face headgear adds facial coverage, depending on the model. Choose based on fit, visibility and your training or competition requirements.
Nose bar or face saver headgear has a padded bar in front of the face to help limit direct contact. It does not guarantee protection against nose injuries.
USA Boxing approved headgear is competition headgear certified to meet USA Boxing’s equipment standards. Certification applies to specific models, not every headgear product from a brand. Choose an approved model that is permitted for your division and event.
Sparring headgear should feel snug without painful pressure and remain stable as you move. If it slips, rotates or obstructs your vision, adjust it or try another size or model.
